Research Review:
Physiotherapy Management of Incontinence in Men
Irmina Nahon Journal of Physiotherapy 67 (2021) 87-94
This topical review looked into the role that physiotherapy plays in managing male urinary and fecal incontinence.
This review highlighted that physiotherapy interventions need to include the following to be effective:
- How to optimally contract the pelvic floor
- How to integrate pelvic floor muscle control into everyday function
- Bladder retraining
- Low intensity tonic pelvic floor holds for sustained tasks
- High level strength and endurance training for high intensity exercise
- High performance training for demand and unexpected challenges
Rehabilitation needs to be highly tailored and individualised based on various factors and assessment findings. Physio management needs to include not only specific lifestyle modification and tips to improve bladder and bowel function but pelvic floor exercises need to be tailored to the clients goals, exercise level, job and lifestyle.
It is in having a highly tailored physiotherapy management plan, that incontinence can be managed effectively.
