Prevalence of defecation Disorders and their Symptoms is Comparable in Children and Young Adults
Marjolijn et. al. 2021
This is a wonderful recent study, exploring the prevalence of defecation disorders and their symptoms in children and young adults.
The primary findings included:
- 1 in 6 children (8-17 yrs) and 1 in 4 young adults (18-29 yrs) were constipated
- ½ of the children who were constipated has suffered constipation for more than 5 years
- ¼ of young adults had suffered from constipation since childhood
- 1 in 4 children and young adults who were constipated had received management options which usually involved laxatives
Constipation can often be resolved or managed in a way that makes it easier to resolve in future when life allows – when your child is mature enough. Additionally, effective management of constipation can significantly reduce the risk of haemorrhoids, prolapse and incontinence.
