Prevalence of defecation Disorders and their Symptoms is Comparable in Children and Young Adults

Marjolijn et. al. 2021

This is a wonderful recent study, exploring the prevalence of defecation disorders and their symptoms in children and young adults.

The primary findings included:

  • 1 in 6 children (8-17 yrs) and 1 in 4 young adults (18-29 yrs) were constipated
  • ½ of the children who were constipated has suffered constipation for more than 5 years
  • ¼ of young adults had suffered from constipation since childhood
  • 1 in 4 children and young adults who were constipated had received management options which usually involved laxatives

Constipation can often be resolved or managed in a way that makes it easier to resolve in future when life allows – when your child is mature enough. Additionally, effective management of constipation can significantly reduce the risk of haemorrhoids, prolapse and incontinence.

If your child has any concerns with constipation or their bowel function, please see your GP and a pelvic floor physio ASAP. Please don’t hesitate to reach out to our friendly admin team and they can book you in with one of our pelvic health physios – simply call (07) 5474 9093 or alternatively, book in online via our bookings page.
